The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food related issues in various Ministries and Departments. FSSAI has been created for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. FSSAI certificate has now become mandatory for all manufacturers, traders, restaurants and those who are involved in food business, commonly termed as Food Business Operators (FBOs).
In case of manufacturing of food related products or dairy products registration is compulsory in nature.
While obtaining registration one has to apply for a license if the turnover exceeds the prescribed limits.
Different licenses are required for different products under different categories.
There will be different license issued under FSSA as requirement of each product is different. So in the same premises if license is being taken for processing of meat, milk & fruits & vegetables, there will be a separate license as these will be done in separate portions & businesses are not connected. However, in case there is fruit & vegetable processing & godown/ store along with it, since these are connected activities, one license is applicable.
If a food business operator is operating in more than two states, it has to obtain one additional central license for the head office/registered office and separate license for each location.
Once obtained the FSSAI license is valid for one or two years, upon its expiry the license needs renewal within 30days of its expiry.
